Microsoft announced today plans to release Visual Studio for Mac at the upcoming Connect() conference set to start this Wednesday on November 16. The move to port Visual Studio, one of Microsoft's most defining products next to Windows and the Office Suite, isn't surprising in the big picture. On the development scene, Microsoft has been very friendly as of late. How to customize mail outlook 2011 for mac youtube. After announcing it would contribute code to the Linux project, porting the Linux bash for Windows 10, open-sourcing the Roslyn.NET compiler platform, developing TypeScript, open-sourcing Edge's JavaScript engine, keeping Xamarin open source after its acquisition, and more, the Redmond company has made another unexpected move. Visual Studio for Mac goes after cloud and mobile developers By porting Visual Studio to the Mac, Microsoft wants to keep developers using its tools, and all its adjacent services, most of which are very Azure-friendly, one of Microsoft's major revenue streams. Azure, who is quite a reputable and reliable service on its own, has had little growth, thanks to the perceived vendor lock-in that many developers expect when dealing with Microsoft products. By porting Visual Studio to the Mac, and of its products, Microsoft is winking at developers and showing them the door. Basically, the decision to port Visual Studio for the Mac is entirely money-driven, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad decision. The same Visual Studio as before As for the application itself, Visual Studio for Mac is the exact same Visual Studio developers have come accustomed to, only with a Mac-like GUI. 'At its heart, Visual Studio for Mac is a macOS counterpart of the Windows version of Visual Studio,' Mikayla Hutchinson, senior program manager on Xamarin Platform at Microsoft explains. 'If you enjoy the Visual Studio development experience, but need or want to use macOS, you should feel right at home,' Hutchinson continues. 'It's UX is inspired by Visual Studio, yet designed to look and feel like a native citizen of macOS. And like Visual Studio for Windows, it’s complemented by for times when you don’t need a full IDE, but want a lightweight yet rich standalone source editor.' A preview will be available on Microsoft's website A preview version of Visual Studio for Mac will be available through the after the Connect() conference. Initial Visual Studio for Mac features include support for IntelliSense, NuGet, TextMate bundles, extensive debugging features, live previews, and a project system and build engine that still uses MSBuild, despite working on a Mac. Even if Visual Studio for Mac supports creating Windows apps, Microsoft expects developers to use it for primarily developing native iOS, Android and Mac apps (via the Xamarin integration) and server development via.NET Core (via the Azure integration). Under the hood, Visual Studio for Mac is written in C# and on top of the open-source MonoDevelop IDE, on which the Xamarin Studio app is also built. This also means that developers can extend it to support new languages and project types not included in Microsoft's upcoming official version.
